biography

Maud Rijken has a hybrid career as an artist and teacher of visual art and art history. As an artist she has specialized in photographic images and graphics such as screen printing and etchings. She has exhibited several times in both solo and group exhibitions.

Rijken studied at the Arnhem School of the Arts (now Artez) in the direction of first degree teacher drawing. Afterwards she completed the training as a documentary photographer at the Academy for Photography in Amsterdam. She has worked as a photojournalist for various newspapers and other clients. Since 2001 she has been working as a teacher of visual and art history in secondary education and mainly teaches senior secondary students, HAVO and VWO. Since this year, she also works for the Board for Testing and Examinations and is a member of the assessment committee for the final exams Art General Havo and Vwo.

Rijken's work is situated on the interface between documentary photography and autonomous art. With a strong fascination for form and alienation, Rijken captures the world in all its daily life. Nature and human interventions in nature are important sources of inspiration and are reflected in almost all her work.

In 2019 Rijken set up a collaborative collective with artist Liesbeth Peters (www.lmco-lab.com). The works they create together are based on experimentation with and research into most natural materials such as textiles, wood, stone, sand, fungi and mosses. The combination of graphic techniques and textile work forms come together in tactile works. Experiment that is controlled from both rationality and intuition is an important starting point.
